The GIF file extension refers to “Graphics Interchange Format”, which is a popular bitmap image format, well known for containing animated image data. Developed by CompuServe in 1987, this format has a wide compatibility range across different platforms and serves great for sharing images on the internet. Supporting up to 8 bits per pixel, GIF images have the capacity to display 256 different colors from the 24-bit RGB color space. Though lossless compression is used on the GIF images the file sizes can be significantly lower that works best for portability. Widely used for logos and graphics with sharp lines and edges, GIF images are editable with almost all editing programs. Corel Painter is rated among the top of them.
