What is a PNG file?

PNG is the shortened form of Portable Network Graphics, which is a popular image file format that contains uncompressed raster image data. Widely used for web sharing, this lossless image format was developed as an alternative to Graphics Interchange Format (GIF). This open format has no copyright limitations, supporting palette-based images of both 24-bit RGB and 32-bit RGBA colors. Specially used for images with transparent backgrounds, PNG format can also contain grayscale images. This format is supported in almost every platform and editable with a number of free and commercial tools like Corel Painter.

How to open PNG files

  1. Know the location of the PNG file you want to open.
  2. Launch Painter and select File> Open. Or from the home menu select “Open Document”.
  3. When the file explorer opens select the file(s) you wish to open and select Open.
  4. Edit the PNG file using Painters many digital painting features, brushes, and tools.
  5. Before closing be sure to name and save the file. File> Save As. Then name the file as desired.
